About
Abe is a DPhil student in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, where his research focuses on mathematical modelling and stability analysis in fluid mechanics. Before this he completed an MSc in Mathematical Sciences at Oxford, and graduated with a First Class degree in Mathematics from the University of Manchester with an overall average of 85%.
He has over a year of tutoring experience, including preparing students for the TMUA, ESAT and STEP and supporting prospective students through Oxbridge applications and interview preparation. To date, 100% of the students he has supported through the Oxbridge admissions process have received offers.
Abe's approach to tutoring is shaped by the way he approaches mathematics himself. Rather than simply teaching students which technique to use, he encourages them to understand why a problem has been constructed in a particular way: why the examiner has given this specific piece of information, what they are really trying to test, and what they might expect you to notice. He also encourages students to approach problems from several different perspectives, even when their first method works.
He believes this is particularly important for Oxbridge admissions and exams such as the TMUA, ESAT and STEP, where technical ability alone is not enough. Having studied mathematics at a high level and experienced the Oxford academic environment first-hand, he aims to help students develop the independence, intuition and problem-solving ability needed to think like strong mathematicians.
Above all, Abe genuinely enjoys mathematics, and finds it extremely rewarding to help ambitious students develop their confidence and reach their potential.
What students say
“Abe helped me prepare for STEP and I honestly couldn't recommend him enough. He was really good at breaking down difficult problems and helping me understand how to actually approach STEP questions rather than just memorising methods. The sessions made me much more confident with harder problems, and with his help I ended up getting an 11 in STEP. He's patient, easy to work with, and genuinely knows his stuff.”
