- 9 to 1. A 4 is a pass, a 7 is roughly the old A. Sixth forms usually want a 6 or 7 to carry a subject on.

- Foundation papers stop at grade 5. The school decides by the spring of Year 11.

- Combined gives two grades. Triple gives three GCSEs and an easier start to A-level.

- 10 May to 18 June 2027. Results on 19 August.

Schools decide tiers by the spring of Year 11, so if you're stuck on Foundation in Year 10, you have a deadline nobody's told you about.
