About

Owen read Modern & Medieval Languages at Girton College, University of Cambridge, staying on for an MPhil in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic. He has been supporting students with university applications for over eight years, beginning with pro bono work for languages applicants while he was still a student himself.

Since graduating he has built a full-time career in education consultancy, taking up various roles at leading consultancies and leading in-house support for personal statements, admissions tests, and interviews at dozens of the UK's top independent schools, among them Wellington, Rugby, Tonbridge, Benenden, and JAGS. He has presented on Oxbridge applications, preparation, and strategy to thousands of students, and has designed and delivered training to help teachers at some of those schools better support their own applicants.

Owen has consulted personally with hundreds of students across almost every subject at Oxford and Cambridge, bringing a data-driven approach to application strategy: course, university and college selection, supercurricular engagement, admissions tests, personal statements, written work, and mock interviews. He also tutors GCSE, IB, and A-Level French, German, and English Literature and Language, advises on postgraduate humanities applications to Russell Group universities, and proofreads and edits PhD theses and academic articles. He is a British Council certified counsellor and has completed Russell Group certified training on supporting students to progress to competitive universities.

He welcomes Oxbridge applicants on any course looking for strategic guidance, alongside holistic application support and GCSE, IB, and A-Level preparation for students interested in languages, linguistics, literature, and history. He particularly enjoys the challenge of the most competitive courses. Outside of university preparation, Owen teaches Old Norse and Old English to interested students and adult learners, is a member of the Philological Society and the Viking Society for Northern Research, and remains an avid reader and language learner — he is currently working towards HSK5 in Chinese.

What students say

  • Owen gave very good support to my son before his French A-Level; his lessons were focussed and useful. He did great mock sessions for his oral and really helped him feel super prepared and confident. I would definitely recommend him.

Debbie K · Parent of an A-Level French Student

  • Owen has been an exceptional tutor for German A-Level for my daughter. He has expected and demonstrated high standards in terms of work undertaken. He has a very thorough knowledge of not just the subject but also the curriculum, which is so vital in a tutor. He has, outside of tutoring hours, ensured that work is marked and has been available for queries. I would recommend Owen completely and without hesitation for his dedication, knowledge, teaching skills and high standards.

George R · Parent of an A-Level German Student

  • Owen has been a fantastic German A-Level tutor for my daughter. His feedback during the sessions was precise and constructive and he has been generous with his time. Owen's lessons have been both valuable and enjoyable and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for an experienced and committed tutor.
